As spandex may be a male and female clothing it is mostly seen on females. Spandex are typically wore in volleyball as a light weight material clothing so the player is able to move around more efficiently. But spandex can be seen as women "trying to show off their butt" or "want men to stare at them". Commercials for spandex usually target women, whether they are athletic, young in their 20s, mothers, and the list could go on. As, I do wear them myself finding them to be pretty comfortable this is definitely a targeted market within women. These commercials are only displaying women who are "fit" or have a "great body" or just want something tight to show off themselves. I always get the vibe that brands only want "fitted" women to be wearing their clothing. For example, when a customer comes into their store they are looking for the ideal women to buy their product and show it off to the public so they can see just how great their products look. Also, brands/stores typically make their sizes too small for a reason. They only want "smaller" women to wear their brand. And this is very true with spandex whether they are shorts or leggings they run small!! For example, the image below fits the typical model of someone who is fit, skinny, and can pull off wearing the "spandex look". This product will always be directed towards women whether it's for their body or the fact that men like the way women look in it. Either way its something that is targeted towards women when in fact men wear them just the same as women do.
